Math Manipulatives
Buena Vista Elementary School This proposal requests funds to purchase a Classroom Math Manipulatives Kit that contains physical objects that students use to master mathematical concepts. Students gain proficiency in addition, subtraction, measurement, geometry, and fractions by sorting, rearranging, and measuring with the manipulatives. Most importantly, manipulatives allow students to make connections between the written or symbolic forms of math and the concrete representations of these corresponding concepts. Specifically, we are requesting funds to purchase the Scott Foresman Classroom Math Manipulatives Kit that complements the textbook and workbook we are already using. This kit is a comprehensive durable supply that will be used in the classroom for many years. Why is this project important? It is well documented that children learn at different levels and through different methods. It is also well known that in todayís technology-based society a strong grasp of math fundamentals is essential for success in school and life beyond. Thus, the goal of math education is to go beyond having students memorize the answers to specific math questions and teach the students the skills necessary for solving a variety of problems. Math manipulatives are fundamental tools in helping students take a concrete idea to the abstract level, which is essential for developing problem solving skills. Who, and how many, will be served? The entire
first grade class will use the Math Manipulatives Kit, which is 54
students or one-fifth of the Buena Vista student population. The Kit is
reusable so each subsequent first grade class will also benefit from this
kit. Thus, in 5 years all the students at Buena Vista will have used the
Kit. Does this proposal build upon existing programs at your school? Yes. Math education is an essential element of our First Grade curriculum. We use Scott Foresmanís textbooks to develop lesson plans. We have only one workbook that complements the textbook, so copies of the worksheets are made so that each student can practice their math skills. Introduction of a math manipulatives kit will greatly enhance the math training for every student. How will the funds be spent? Purchase the Math Classroom Manipulatives Kit from Scott Foresman that complements the textbook and workbook we are currently using.
