Coburg Elementary

For the past four years, the Eugene Education Fund has generously granted our request for funds that allow us to have a small amount of staff coverage in the library. Unfortunately, our allotted hours for teachers and instructional assistants have been cut once again this year. As a result, Coburg Elementary continues to rely solely on the financial support of EEF to provide the hours needed to staff the library for several hours, one day per week. Although we would love to offer our students and community additional access to the library, our current staffing provides students and community members a valuable service. It allows each child access to the library one day per week.

This grant is crucial to the development of our children. If our classified library assistant is funded she will continue to provide the following support:
Catalog and update our collection
Provide training for older students on use of search engines and the library browser
Utilize trained library tutors (intermediate age students) to assist younger students in library searches
Help students, parents, and community members locate books and information
Provide assistance to teachers by assembling books around a specific theme or area of interest.

Why is this project important?

Without this additional funding for a classified library assistant to check items in and out, we will be unable to give our students the joys of reading new books on a weekly basis. Given the ongoing upgrades to our library, our students deserve the opportunity to take full advantage of what it has to offer.

Who, and how many, will be served?

All Coburg Elementary students, kindergarten through fifth grade, will have the opportunity to benefit from this service. In addition, this program provides a service to our on-site preschool students and their families. Also, community members of all ages are encouraged to browse our shelves and make use of our facility.

How will you evaluate the success of this project?

The evaluation of this project will come from formal assessment by staff and site council. Members of the community and families will be given the opportunity to complete a survey with regard to the effectiveness of our library program.

Does this proposal build upon existing programs at your school?

Parents and community members currently support our library. We have assembled a vast array of books and multimedia for students and community members to share. This proposal will enable students and community members to enjoy a new book in a cozy place and develop a true love of reading and literature. Coburg has assembled all of the tools to provide this opportunity for our children. However, we can no longer provide the staffing to continue this extremely valuable experience for our students without your help.

How will the funds be spent?

Salary for continued library coverage by one of our classified teaching assistants.
