Expanding Classroom Instruction
Magnet Arts Elementary School Provide a fund for students so that Magnet Arts' low-income, at-risk students can have the same opportunity to attend Eugene's arts programs, eat at a local ethnic restaurant and attend museums and science exhibitions as students in larger, more affluent schools. Why is this project important? Magnet Arts staff believe that an important part of education is taking knowledge learned in the classroom and applying it to real life situations in the community. Unfortunately, as a Title school with a large at-risk population, our parents are not able to provide money for the fees associated with visiting local museums, arts presentations, ethnic restaurants or science exhibits. As an arts school, these projects are especially important. Since we have such a large number of parents who cannot afford fees, or even the gas to drive to events, and since there is no budget for this type of activity, students have to miss some important enrichment activities that other higher economic schools get to experience. Who and how many will be served? Thirty (30) low-income first and second graders would be assisted. This allows for approximately $15 per targeted low-income student for yearly activities. How will you evaluated the success of this project? We will match the requests for funds to each field experience and determine the % of students who needed extra assistance in order to participate. Does this proposal build upon existing programs at your school? As a Title school, we provide free and reduced lunch and academics to low-income at-risk youth. This project, if funded, would add the critically important enrichment leg of education that low-income families often never get to experience. How will the funds be used? Entrance fees, participation fees and one meal at a local ethnic sit down restaurant that is NOT fast food (after we teach manners, the ethnic culture and proper conduct in public).
