Energizing Instruction
Meadowlark Elementary Funding of this project will provide inservice training for eleven elementary school teachers. The training focuses on the Brain Gym method of instruction. Brain Gym is a learning readiness program based on current research on the human brain, movement, learning and performance. These activities used in the classroom increase the brain's ability to receive, store, and express information. Teachers would be trained by a licensed practitioner during after school sessions. These sessions also include follow up feedback by the instructor after teachers have implemented the activities with students. The second part of this project is to provide materials and resources for teachers to apply brain-based instruction. The majority of our teachers attended a 4J district sponsored 4 day workshop series this summer and had a chance to preview useful materials. These materials include music CDs which are systematically devised to optimize learning. Materials also include teacher's guides which instruct teachers about integrating lifeskills with academic skills. Specific Brain Gym activities are outlined in guidebooks provided by this project. These resources offer activities for activating, energizing, and mobilizing instructional strategies. Why is this project important? This project is important because it gives teachers the necessary skills and opportunities to provide optimal instruction based on the most current research. Our school is comprised of 54% free and reduced students and we administer Title One services. We always strive to meet the instructional needs of every child. Brain-based strategies are another way to reach low performing students and to narrow the achievement gap that exists. We have a strong teaching staff which is very motivated touse these instructional strategies. Who, and how many, will be served? Our whole student body of 224 students would be served by this project. All teachers are committed to using the materials and instructional strategies. Teachers will benefit by learning specific techniques and skills. Materials will be shared by grade level partners, including our specialists. How will you evaluate the success of this project? Success of this project will be evaluated by the specific feedback that the Brain Gym teacher provides the staff as well as observing student reaction and interaction with the materials. Staff will also regularly discuss their progress during staff meetings. The principal will observe classroomsand note strategies used successfully. Does this proposal build upon existing programs at your school? We currently have two teachers who attended Brain Gym training. Teachers are eager to implement the training schooled. This project builds on Eugene 4J district's staff development plans which focus on brain-based learning. We would like the chance to become a school that is a leader in this area. How will the funds be spent? Training by Mariya Masters; Brain Gym poster charts of movements; Brain compatible music CDs for classroom use; Exceeding Expectation Teachers' Guide; Hands-on Brain Gym for classrooms; Brain Gym Teacher Editions.
