Computers on Wheels

Meadowlark Elementary

This project enables teachers to receive hands-on training in the use of Meadowlark's mobile computer lab called Computers on Wheels or COW. This lab consists of 15 wireless laptops which are housed in a movable cart. The teaching staff is very excited to use the mobile lab with their students to integrate technology into as many subject areas as possible. We are also focusing on project-based learning and assisting students with technology to complete projects.

Funding from this project will be used to provide substitute teachers for Meadowlark teachers to get training on the COW. Teachers will work in teams by grade levels and receive training from the 4J Instructional Technology Specialist. She will provide intensive training during half days once a month. Instruction would include how to set up and maintain the lab, troubleshooting problems, and methods for integrating the use of the lab in the classroom including the use of a projection system. The technology specialist will be available to classroom teachers to model how to use the COW with students. She will also be available to observe teachers and give feedback to them as they use theCOW in their classrooms with students.

This project involves the Meadowlark teaching staff including the Music Specialist, Spanish teacher, Title I teachers, and Special Education teacher. The teaching staff is committed to learning how to effectively integrate technology into our curriculum. The teaching staff along with the principal and district specialist will develop a scope and sequence for the teacher training as well as a sequence of skills students need in order to integrate technology into their learning.

Why is this project important?

This project is very important because we are teaching in the 21st century. In order to effectively use technology with students, teachers need to be trained in important skills regarding technological equipment. It's important that our students in particular have the opportunity to use technology effectively. Meadowlark is a Title I school where 54% or our students receive free and reduced lunches. Many of our students do not have access to technology at home. We are currently revising our technology plan and expect to go to wireless technology in the near future and are making plans for funding. This project will help attain our goal of providing wireless instruction to our students.

Who, and how many, will be served?

All students in our school will be served by this project. Our enrollment is currently 224 students. All teachers, eleven total, will participate in this project. Training will also include some Instructional Assistants that work in the classroom providing Title I services and our technology assistant.

How will you evaluate the success of this project?

The project will ultimately be evaluated by student outcomes using the technology available. We will know if the project has been successful based on projects produced by students across the grade levels. We plan on holding a project fair where students display what they studied and present their projects. We will also know success by tracking the use of the COW in classrooms and the frequency with which it is checked out for use. We have a schedule that tracks the use of the COW mobile lab. Teachers will feel successful at using the COW and therefore will use it often to integrate into student instruction.

Does this proposal build upon existing programs at your school?

Yes, this project builds on existing programs. It is a critical part of our newly revised technology plan. We have invested $20,000 for the purchase of the COW mobile lab. Funding of this project will provide a more efficient, systematic method for training teachers. The skills and training won't just fall to a few staff members. We are all aware of how motivating technology can be to students, particularly students with various learning styles. This project provides the necessary time that teachers need to learn critical skills. <underline>

How will the funds be spent?

Substitute salary.
