Technology Integration

Willagillespie Elementary School

Willagillespie School is a neighborhood school of 264 students. Our mission is to support a dynamic, secure, and nurturing learning environment, promoting student success and empowerment. In support of this mission, the PTO replaced the antiquated computers in the lab with IMAC computers. We have since discovered that staff have varying abilities in the use of technology to support learning. We hope to develop a continuous professional development sequence. Using the integrated team model, small groups will attend specific inservice training sequence (using technology to enhance reading, increasing problem solving skills using computers, etc). Each training sequence will start with basic familiarity with current technologies and move toward the integration and embedding of technology into the curriculum.

The training will be facilitated by a CIS educational consultant in addition to Willagillespie technology consultant. This model will allow for teacher to teacher support that encourages the support for all peers to be actively engaged in the process of learning as well as implementation. Benefits to students will be tremendous as teachers meet the diverse learning styles of their students. Additional follow up sessions is planned to provide the necessary technical support, and tailored assistance to support students especially in need of non traditional teaching strategies.

Why is this project important?

The success of all children entrusted to our care requires that we use all tools available to us to engage them, and to get kids actively involved in their learning. These students have been bombarded with all kinds of technology since day "0". From baby monitors, through video games as well as computer games, these kids are more at ease with the use of technology. Teachers are having to play catch up, and as they feel at ease with technology, better instructions will be planned to meet the needs of all diverse learners.

Who, and how many, will be served?

This project will serve approximately 264 students and 23 staff members initially. The secondary benefits will be more far reaching. Our students will start their middle school education having a range of skills at their disposal, resulting in success at both the elementary and middle levels.

How will you evaluate the success of this project?

A pre and post assessment of staff and students will be given to measure the effect of the training. Anecdotal reporting of how many students are utilizing technology for projects, reports and learning of new concepts will be recorded to measure effects.

Does this proposal build upon existing programs at your school?

We have just completed upgrading our IMAC computers with updated software. In addition, Willagillespie is fortunate to participate in the 4J Palm Project. Four teachers have received training in using Palm technology to improve learning. Approval of this proposal allows all staff to increase their knowledge base, and to help kids learn.

How will the funds be spent?

Staffing (one half-day per session).
